Welcome  to  War  of  the  Wings

South Island Sprintcar Series

In the late nineties Sprintcar racing in the South Island was in dire straits. An urgent meeting was held for drivers and 'interested parties' to inject some life and hope into the class to ensure its survival.

The car numbers were low (eight, with six drivers committed to regular racing) while enthusiasm was high but a big problem was that Ruapuna was the only track south of the Cook Strait that regularly catered for the class.

The South Island Sprintcar Association was formed, and it was decided that the best way to get the ball rolling was to create a Series... in fact two series were encouraged. One for Sprintcars, and one for Modifieds and 360 cubic inch Sprintcars.

And so they were born...'The War of the Wings' name for the Sprinters and the 'United Modified and 360 Sprintcar Series' for those cars.

The War of the Wings (WoW)quickly gathered momentum, while the 'United' deal quickly fell over.

The first eight years of the WoW saw the schedule pretty much limited to Ruapuna, with the odd cameo performance at the likes of Dunedin and Cromwell, but in 2007 it took off with car numbers and prize money climbing rapidly.

It is now the richest domestic speedway series in New Zealand with over $60,000 up for grabs and drivers from the North island look on with envy, as the WoW continues to develop Sprintcar racing here in the south to a level never seen before.
